Key module information

SCOTCAT credits

15

The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

Module description

This module will introduce the concept of 'Ecosystem-based management', exploring its development from more simplistic, single-species approaches. The course will begin with a series of ecosystem-specific case studies led by lecturers who have first-hand experience of the respective systems. The class will undertake case-studies in their own time of marine systems of their choosing and lead some seminars that will give the entire class the opportunity to discuss ecological and management issues pertinent to each system. The module will then consider environmental, ecological and socio-economic benefits that have arisen locally following the transition to ecosystem-based management.
