Entry requirements

  • For entry onto the MSc: A 2.1 undergraduate Honours degree in any subject other than Business or Management from the UK or the equivalent international qualification.
  • If you studied your first degree outside the UK, see the international entry requirements.
  • We may also consider applicants who do not have an undergraduate degree. In these circumstances we expect candidates to have at least five years of relevant professional learning.
  • Students with a background in business or management are advised to consider the MLitt International Business or the MLitt Marketing

  • English language proficiency. See English language tests and qualifications.

The qualifications listed are indicative minimum requirements for entry. Some academic Schools will ask applicants to achieve significantly higher marks than the minimum. Obtaining the listed entry requirements will not guarantee you a place, as the University considers all aspects of every application including, where applicable, the writing sample, personal statement, and supporting documents.

Modules

Modules may be subject to change before you start your course. For more details of each module, including weekly contact hours, teaching methods and assessment, please see the module catalogue.

Each module typically consists of three to five contact hours per week including lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. Assessment is either entirely by coursework or through a combination of coursework and a two-hour end-of-semester examination.

Entrepreneurship MSc students will do an Entrepreneurship Project rather than a traditional dissertation.

In addition to an academic supervisor, students will have the benefit of an entrepreneur-mentor for this final project.

Teaching

Teaching is delivered through a mixture of interactive small group teaching and some lectures, seminars and guest speakers.

A mixture of exams and coursework, including more traditional individual assignments and group projects.

Students are academically supported by their dedicated programme director as well as the Director of Postgraduate Programmes.

Events

The University of St Andrews Business School hosts events and guest lectures during Orientation Week and throughout the year, providing students and staff with opportunities to socialise and to engage with visiting scholars, professionals and practitioners. 

The Management Society, a student-led organisation, hosts a broad range of activities, both subject-related and social. The University Students' Association has a number of other student societies relating to the management discipline. 

The Masters Extra (MX) is a programme of events focusing on careers and personal and professional development, designed specifically for taught masters students in the University of St Andrews Business School. The series of talks, workshops, networking opportunities and activities includes guest lectures from entrepreneurs, experienced managers and leading researchers.

Careers

This programme will prepare students to undertake an entrepreneurial activity, from launching their own business to working for a start-up, or bringing an entrepreneurial mindset and a creative approach to an existing organisation. 

Alumni from the Masters programmes in the University of St Andrews Business School have secured employment in the fields of general management, marketing and brand management, marketing research, management consultancy, fund administration and other aspects of the financial services industry. 

In the past, students in this school have also gone on to set up their own businesses and have become successful entrepreneurs in different sectors.

The Careers Centre offers one-to-one advice to all students as well as a programme of events to assist students in building their employability skills.


Further study

Many Management graduates continue their education by enrolling in PhD programmes at St Andrews or elsewhere.

The ESRC Scottish Graduate School of Social Science offers fully funded awards for PhD students in the School of Management.

The University of St Andrews Business School often offers Management PhD studentships comprising a stipend at RCUK level and a fee waiver at Home and EU level.
