English language requirements for pre-degree students
The requirements on this page are relevant for pre-degree applicants for the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 academic years. The 2024-2025 academic year includes courses starting in September 2024 and January 2025 whilst the 2025-2026 academic year includes courses starting in September 2025 and January 2026.
All students applying for any of the pre-degree programmes or courses listed on this page, need to provide evidence of their English language ability.
Do I need to provide an English language test score?
If you use English as an additional language and you are coming to study at the University of St Andrews as a pre-degree student, you must provide evidence that you meet the English language requirements for pre-degree students.
If your English language evidence will be used as part of a visa application, it must be a Secure English Language Test (SELT).
The SELTs approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and accepted by the University of St Andrews for English language evidence are:
- IELTS (Academic) for UKVI
- Pearson PTE (Academic) for UKVI
- Trinity ISE II SELT/ Trinity ISE III SELT
- LanguageCert International ESOL SELT B2/ LanguageCert International ESOL SELT C1
- PSI Skills for English UKVI
If you do not require a visa to study at St Andrews then you may be able to use other evidence to demonstrate your English language ability. Please see the sections below for more details.
Which English language test score should I provide?
This depends on the programme you wish to study. See the sections below for more details.
Providing your English language evidence
Evidence of your English language ability can be submitted through the applicant portal. If you do not have evidence available when you submit your application, this will form part of any conditional offer made by the University and you will be expected to provide the evidence at a later date.
