International students
If you are an international student you are likely to have an 'Overseas' fee status, and you may be eligible to apply for support and funding in your home country to help you cover the costs of university.
Tuition fees
As a student at the University of St Andrews, you will be expected to pay fees every year that you are in attendance. The amount you will have to pay depends on your fee status and the degree you are studying for.
You may be eligible for tuition fee support within your home country. You must either pay your tuition fees online in advance or upon matriculation in September. Other payment options, including an instalment plan, are described in detail on the how to pay your fees webpage.
If you are studying in the Faculty of Arts, Divinity or Science, tuition fees for 2025-2026 will be £31,670. Each year we make changes to our fees so we can continue to invest in your student experience. Fees will be adjusted annually, with adjustments typically ranging between 3% and 5%, to reflect inflationary pressures to which we may be exposed.
If you are studying in the Faculty of Medicine, tuition fees for entrant students in 2025-2026 will be £37,730. The Scottish Government has introduced a mandatory national levy for overseas medical students for each year of study to cover the costs of NHS clinical teaching, which is reflected in the tuition fee. Each year we make changes to our fees so we can continue to invest in your student experience. Fees will be adjusted annually, with adjustments typically ranging between 3% and 5%, to reflect inflationary pressures to which we may be exposed, or to take into account a rise in the mandatory levy.
Bursaries and scholarships
The University of St Andrews is committed to attracting the very best students regardless of their financial circumstances. We offer a large number of bursaries and scholarships to undergraduate students, and there are also a number of external grants offered from outside the University.
See a list of bursaries and scholarships that may be available to you as an international student.
Student finance
You will incur a number of expenses and charges at university that are not covered by annual tuition fees, including the cost of accommodation and individual subsistence. You should contact the relevant authority in your home country to find out what financial support may be available to assist you with living costs.
As an international student, you will be required to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds available to complete your studies when you apply for your student visa.
US loans
The University of St Andrews is a Title IV accredited institution and is authorised to certify applications for both federal direct loans and alternative education (‘private’) loans. Full details are on the US funding webpage.
GI Bill®
The University of St Andrews is approved to process Veterans Affairs benefits.
To check personal eligibility for funding through the GI Bill®, please see the Department of Veteran Affairs.
Students must also have their intended programme of study approved. Students can check with the Department of Veterans Affairs or with the University of St Andrews whether their programme has already been approved. The University can seek approval for new programmes, but this can only be done once the student has received an offer.
The BA International Honours (joint with the College of William & Mary) programme is not eligible for VA funding.
Students should inform the University at the beginning of each academic year that funding is required. The University will send the relevant form to the Department of Veterans Affairs which will trigger the release of payments. As a foreign school, there is a maximum amount that the VA will provide in funding; however, the University is not made aware of the exact amount that will be paid until confirmation of payment is received.
Additional enquiries should be directed to the St Andrews US Loan team at usloan@st-andrews.ac.uk.
