The Centre for Energy Ethics and the School of Philosophical, Social Anthropology and Film Studies are delighted to offer a scholarship opportunity to support students in conducting high-quality, independent research projects. It is open to students from all disciplines and subject areas whose dissertation research relates to energy, climate change, climate action, and or ‘just transition’. 

Applications for semester two will close on Monday 7 April 2025.

At the CEE, we value events that engage with diverse audiences and have an impact on how we make sense of the world. Events can lead to a deeper, more nuanced understanding of energy issues. To track such impact, we have developed these guidelines

Value of award (per year)

Up to £500 towards research expenses related to the dissertation. Grants will be paid out in two instalments:

  • 70% of the total will be paid to the successful awardee upon decision
  • the remaining 30% will be paid upon receipt of the final report

Grants are tenable for up to 12 months from the date of award. 

Eligible expenses include travel and accommodation costs related to research activities, access to archives, sources or datasets, and or lab access.

Duration of award

The award will be paid out for the duration of the awardee's dissertation period.

Grants are open to Honours Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate students matriculated at the University of St Andrews and undertaking a dissertation research project as part of their degree programme.

The scheme is open to students from all disciplines and subject areas whose research relates to energy, climate change, climate action, and or ‘just transition’.

Letter of support

As part of the application you are required to upload a letter of support from your dissertation supervisor.

  • Successful applicants will be required to account for the spend and evidence that the money was spent in line with the original purpose as outlined in the application form.
  • All expenditure must follow the University's expenses policy.
  • Eligible expenses include travel and accommodation costs related to research activities, access to archives, sources or datasets, and or lab access.
  • Grant holders will be required to submit a short final report (see further guidance) to events.cee@st-andrews.ac.uk within three months of the completion of research, demonstrating the impact of the award on their research.
  • Grants are tenable for up to 12 months from the date of award.

Upon completion of their dissertation research, all grant holders will be invited to publish their research by writing a post for The Energy Blog and or recording a segment for the All About Energy podcast.
