The University of St Andrews is pleased to offer postgraduate scholarships funded by the Aziz Foundation.

Applications are welcome from British Muslims who wish to advance in their careers and bring positive change to their communities and beyond. The aim is to support emerging leaders who have a high level of commitment to the community as well as the aspirations to lead and inspire in their respective field.

One year Masters programmes (MSc, MLitt or MRes) within the following areas: Media & Journalism, Technology, Sustainability/Environment, Law, Policy (excluding Health Policy), Arts & Culture, Sports. Scholarships are not available for Masters by Research, MPhil, MFA, Doctoral degrees, postgraduate certificates/ diplomas, or distance learning (Online) programmes.

Additional criteria

Applicants should meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be eligible for Home fees status.
  • Be active within a Muslim community and demonstrate intimate knowledge of issues affecting British Muslim communities.
  • Demonstrate long-term commitment to community/societal development within Britain.
  • Show how the course will increase their effectiveness in one of the following areas relating to British Muslims:
    1. Effective Advocacy and Enhance Public Perception – facilitating better representation and contribution of Muslims to civil society to combat Islamophobia and positively transform perceptions of British Muslims.
    2. Community Service and Social Development – raising the aspirations and standards within British Muslim communities.

In addition to the above, candidates are also expected to have:

  • Excellent understanding of their chosen industry and how to progress within it, with relevant, prior experience and/or achievements in the field.
  • Knowledge of how the course will enable them to generate social impact.

Applicants must apply to the University for admission to a one year postgraduate taught degree and then to the Aziz Foundation for the scholarship.

Please be aware of the following requirements:

  • Core personal details may be passed to the benefactors of your scholarship. Your name, the name of your town of origin, school/college and subject of study will be passed to the donor of the scholarship with your consent.
  • Your scholarship award in subsequent years of study is conditional upon your successful completion of the academic requirements to progress in your proposed subject of study at the University of St Andrews. If your scholarship is subject-related then your award is usually also conditional upon your continuing to study that specific subject.
  • Attendance at Development related scholarship events (including invitations to meet the donors) is strongly encouraged. You will be invited to these as appropriate by the Development Office.
  • Submission of reports throughout the period of scholarship support. You are required to submit an Introductory Biography at the start of your award period and the Development Office will contact you towards the end of the academic session for a report on your time at St Andrews to share with the donors of your award. This will be an annual cycle for the duration of your award.
