The International Education Institute awards the Next Step IFP January scholarship to an exceptional student planning to start an International Foundation programme at the University of St Andrews in January 2025.
Value of award (per year)
£3,000
- This is paid as a personal stipend in two instalments. The first payment of £1,000 will be issued to you as a monetary stipend when you begin your International Foundation programme. The second payment of £2,000 will be issued to you as a monetary stipend when you start your undergraduate degree. The Next Step IFP January scholarship is not transferable to any other programme of study at the University of St Andrews.
- The offer of a scholarship is provisional on the offer holder accepting and enrolling on an eligible International Foundation programme (January 2025 entry) by the enrolment deadline.
- Students who interrupt, suspend or cease their studies are not eligible to receive the scholarship and will have the scholarship offer withdrawn.
Duration of award
This award is paid over two years. The first payment is made when you begin your foundation studies at the University of St Andrews. The second payment is made when you begin your undergraduate programme at the University of St Andrews.

To be eligible to apply for the Next Step IFP January scholarship, you must:
- Be an offer-holder on an International Foundation programme at the University of St Andrews.
- Be intending to study one of the following degrees at the University of St Andrews:
- BSc Chemistry
- MA Film Studies
- BSc Geography or MA Geography
- MGeol Earth Sciences
- BSc Environmental Earth Sciences.
- Be willing to be an ambassador for the International Education Institute and your foundation programme while receiving Next Step IFP funding.
How to apply
This scholarship application is in two parts:
- a form that you must complete inside My Application
- a video that you must submit to ifp@st-andrews.ac.uk.
When you hold an offer for an International Foundation programme starting in January 2025, you can access Scholarships and Funding through My Application.
Video submission
Your video must be no longer than two minutes in duration. It should demonstrate:
- A well-structured presentation, including a title frame, a closing frame and subtitles.
- Content that describes your interest in and enthusiasm for your chosen degree subject.
- Why you would be an effective ambassador for your intended degree subject.
You could describe where your interest began, or explain how you plan to use your degree in this subject.
You might mention key people or projects or places related to your degree subject, talk about any relevant experience you have had in preparing to study it, or share examples of inspirational stories in this field of study.
Your two-minute video can include music, photographs, graphics and subtitles but it must also include at least one minute of you on camera and talking directly to camera.
The filename of your video must include:
- your applicant ID number at the University of St Andrews
- your first name and last name
- the name of the programme you have an offer for.
A file name would therefore look like this example: 240018171-DiraLam-ChemistryIYZ
Send your two-minute video to ifp@st-andrews.ac.uk and include in your email:
- your full name
- the name of the programme you applied for
You can also send us a Google Drive link to your video but please make sure you give us access to view it with no time limit.
The video is only part of the application process. To be considered for the scholarship, you must also complete the application form in My Application before the deadline of 1 December 2024.
Terms and conditions
- The offer of a scholarship is provisional on the offer holder accepting and enrolling on an undergraduate programme at the University of St Andrews in the next academic cycle.
- The offer of a scholarship is provisional on the Next Step IFP scholar agreeing to an ambassadorial role and carrying out their ambassadorial duties for up to ten hours per semester. Awardees who wish to withdraw from this ambassadorial role will have their second instalment of funding withdrawn.
- The panel will shortlist up to four applicants for review.
- The panel will select one successful candidate. If no suitable candidate is identified, no award will be made.
- The University will communicate the outcome of the selection panel to the successful applicant only.
- The selection panel will consist of a group of key academics and professional services staff from the University of St Andrews. All decisions are final.
- Scholarship applicants and recipients agree to University of St Andrews using:
- Content of their video submissions for promotional purposes online.
- An image of the recipient in promotional materials online and in print.
- Students who interrupt, suspend or cease their studies are not eligible to receive the scholarship. In these cases, the University will withdraw the scholarship offer.

When will I know the outcome?
