Europaeum

Founded in 1992 by the University of Oxford, the Europaeum is an association of eighteen of Europe’s leading universities, including the University of St Andrews. The Europaeum aims to promote collaboration in Humanities and the Social Sciences between the partners, and to support talented people to make a difference across Europe.

Their flagship initiative is the Europaeum Scholars Programme, which runs a new call every two years. In 2022-2023, three students from the University of St Andrews were successful in their application. They are now enrolled in this 18 month long policy and leadership course and have access to a wealth of learning opportunities.

The Europaeum Scholars Programme 2022/23 aims to engage academic thinking with policy making, to produce a new generation of leaders, thinkers and researchers with the capacity to meet the cultural, political and societal challenges facing Europe today.

It is a world-class skills and leadership programme which runs alongside a PhD. It is aimed at highly motivated PhD students in the Humanities or Social Sciences who have the desire0 to shape the future of Europe for the better. Scholars work in a team on a policy project, benefitting from the mentorship of leading academics, professional training and opportunities to meet with policy makers, stakeholders and students across Europe.

Successful Scholars will attend 7-8 modules over two years. Being multi-locational and multi-institutional, the programme draws upon the resources of all the Europaeum university members.

The Scholars Programme involves multidisciplinary teamwork engaged in problem solving within the context of contemporary Europe. Scholars work intensively in small groups on a policy project that they identify, design and develop under the guidance of a mentor.

Each student is fully funded by a scholarship covering accommodation, travel, food and tuition. No funds are transferred direct to Scholars but the scholarship is worth about €10,000.

Applicants must be a first or second-year PhD student enrolled on a relevant doctoral programme at St Andrews. This should be in the Humanities or Social Sciences (or a joint degree including Humanities or Social Sciences).

The criteria for selection include outstanding academic ability, evidence of clear commitment to promoting the public good, and willingness to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue.
