Careers advice
Volunteering work can be just as valid a source of workplace experience as a paid internship, if you make the most of it.
- The frequent autonomy, self-motivation and level of responsibility required are well worth stressing.
- This type of experience should be presented in exactly the same way as other work experience on your CV: a bullet-pointed account of your achievements, responsibilities and skills and experience gained.
- Frequent volunteer work can merit a CV section all to itself; occasional or one-off stints can be included under a heading of Work Experience or Relevant Experience, as required.
- Other resources on volunteer work are available through the Careers Centre work experience pages.
- Advice on CV structure and professional applications can also be found on the Careers Centre website.
