Leaving accommodation

This page contains information for students leaving their accommodation at the end of their contract.

If you are departing your residence early, for example, if you are taking a temporary leave of absence or are withdrawing from the University, see the contract information page for information on cancelling your contract.

When you leave

Before 10am on the last day of your contract, you must:

  1. Remove all your personal belongings from your room and communal areas.
  2. Check that all inventory items are present and in the correct place.
  3. Clean and vacuum your room and remove all rubbish. The kitchens and communal areas of your flat, house or hall should be left in a clean and tidy state.
  4. Remove any unwanted items to the appropriate recycling point. If you are unsure what to do with unwanted items, please check with your residence management team. They will be able to provide you with further information about disposing certain items, such as whether they can be donated to one of the many charities in town.
  5. Return all furniture to its original position.
  6. Vacate your room.
  7. Return your key or keycard to your hall reception or office. If you fail to return your key, you will be charged for a replacement key and lock.

You will be charged for any excessive cleaning and removal of rubbish from your room and kitchen. If there are inventory items missing or damaged, you will be charged for their replacement.

It is your responsibility to make sure you have packed everything and taken it with you. Any items left in your room will immediately be disposed of, and you will be charged.

End of tenancy

Please check your contract to confirm the date you are required to move out. It is not normally possible to change this date, as rooms are required for incoming students.

If for academic reasons, for example, extension to dissertation submission date, you need to extend your stay for a short period, please contact student accommodation at accommodation@st-andrews.ac.uk as soon as possible.

We cannot guarantee that accommodation will be available and you may be required to move rooms. Extensions beyond the start of the next academic year are extremely unlikely to be available and you should make alternative arrangements.

Storage

If you need to store items during term time, please check with your residential service manager (see contact details for individual halls). In most residences, there is extremely limited availability.

During the summer vacation, the residences are either undergoing maintenance or are used for conferences and other commercial bookings, so there are no University storage facilities available for students during the summer. There are a number of storage companies advertised within the residences.
