Use of electrical equipment

Fire safety

To avoid the risk of fire, you can only use electrical equipment in your room within residences if it's safe, in good condition, and doesn't overload circuits.

See the health, safety and security page for further information on fire safety.

High-powered electrical equipment

You are not allowed to use high-powered electrical equipment like heaters (except those provided by the residences), kettles, irons, electric blankets, toasters, refrigerators, microwaves, electric rings, or any cooking devices in study bedrooms.

See the furniture and personal items page for a full list of prohibited items.

Plugs and power supplies

Plugs must be wired correctly and fused as per the manufacturer's instructions.

Only use travel adapters and converters with UK-bought electric toothbrushes and shavers. Make sure the adapters themselves are bought in the UK and have fuses.

For any other devices you want to use in the residences, please get a UK power supply.

A plug must supply only one piece of equipment.

If you need more sockets, use a multi-way distribution board with 13 amp shuttered outlets.

See the University of St Andrews documentation on the use of electrical adapters.

Portable Appliance Testing or PAT Testing

All electrical devices must pass a Portable Appliance Test for safety.

This is done by Residential and Business Services at the start of the academic session.

Items brought in later must be inspected and certified by a qualified individual, paid for by the student.

Role of the residence manager

If unsure, contact the residence manager who may consult a qualified person.

Individuals bringing electrical devices are responsible for their safety and proper use.

The residence manager can reject or remove equipment from rooms if needed.

The University is not liable for any damage or injuries due to personal electrical devices in the residence.
