RAE 2001

The 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) ranked the University of St Andrews top in Scotland and within the top ten in the UK for research attaining international excellence.

All departments at the University achieved a rating of 4 or higher, meaning that all departments achieved international excellence in some aspects of their research. 89% of staff were entered for assessment in the RAE 2001, among the highest percentages in the UK.

Assessment panels used a standard scale to award a rating for each submission. Ratings range from 1 to 5*, according to how much of the work is judged to reach national or international levels of excellence.

The RAE provides benchmarks which are used by institutions in developing and managing their research strategies. Scottish Higher Education Institutions receive a Quality Research (QR) grant as part of their annual block grant from the Scottish Funding Council based on the RAE outcome.
