Dissertation and thesis

Print and Design is ideally set up to print and bind your dissertation or thesis. Printing and soft binding can normally be carried out while you wait. However, this may not be guaranteed during busy times, when large numbers of students want their dissertations to be printed and bound.

Useful information on how to prepare your thesis can be found on the postgraduate theses web page. Some Schools and Departments no longer require printed submissions. Confirm the requirements that apply to you.

For printing and binding, the easiest option is to send your dissertation or thesis electronically at least two days (not including weekends) before you need it.

The Design Unit at St Katharine's West can print onto 100gsm high-quality digital paper and then soft bind using the Unibind method.

The costs for binding and for printing colour pages and black and white pages are charged separately and added together to give you a final price. Please check the price list.

Please note that print credits are not applicable within Print and Design.

If you prefer to print a document yourself, you can bring the prints to St Katharine's West to be Unibound, usually while you wait.

The Print Unit at 65 North Street provides a fabric spine soft binding service in St Andrews blue, usually while you wait. Hard case binding takes longer - please allow three days after you have submitted your printed thesis.

Allow at least two days before the printed copy is required, not including weekends.

Send your dissertation as a PDF file (at least Acrobat Version 9) to printanddesign@st-andrews.ac.uk. In Microsoft Word (version 2007 upwards) you can save your document as file type 'PDF (.pdf)'.

Your dissertation should be 1.5 line spaced with a margin of no less than 25mm. You should also refer to your School handbook or website for full details of expected layouts and formats.

Check your PDF file carefully before sending, if you have sent the wrong file or there are errors, you will be charged for reprinting.

If you include the University logo - see the correct and incorrect use of the University of St Andrews logo.

In your email, you must confirm:
- how many copies are required
- which pages (if any) are to be printed in colour
- if it is to be printed single-sided (no more than 280 pages) or double-sided
- whether it is to be fabric spine softbound or Unibound
- date required
All dissertations are printed at St Katharine's West and will be Unibound, if no specific soft binding option is requested.

If you would prefer your dissertation to have fabric spine binding, you must collect the prints from St Katharine's West and take them to 65 North Street.

Once your dissertation is ready, you will be emailed with a link to the Online Payment Services where you can make payment by card before collection.

Send your thesis as a PDF file (at least Acrobat Version 9) to printanddesign@st-andrews.ac.uk. In Microsoft Word (version 2007 upwards) you can save your document as file type 'PDF (.pdf)'.

In your email, you must confirm:
- that this is the final post-Viva thesis
- date required
- how many copies are required
- which pages (if any) are to be printed in colour
- if it is to be printed single-sided or double-sided
- if it needs to be burned to a CD
- if the hard case binding style is to be standard or deluxe
- if it needs to be posted overseas, if yes provide details.
The front cover will bear the title of the thesis and the candidate's name in 14pt type. The spline, reading from top to bottom, will give the type of award, the name of the candidate, and the year of graduation in 18pt type.

Two-part payment

When your thesis has been printed, the Design Unit will send a confirmation email with a link to the Online Payment Services where you can make payment by card for the printing element.

When the binding is complete, the Print Unit will send you a second email containing a link to allow you to pay for the hard case binding and any overseas postage.

Dispatch of final copies

Following receipt of payment, the final copies are sent to Registry and dispatched by post as per your instructions.
