Course information

This interactive session, delivered by IELLI's Educational Developer, will provide a brief introduction to various theories of how people learn (Kolb's Experiential Learning Cycle, constructivism, cognitive science, theshold concepts), with a particular focus on what this means for how we approach our teaching.

What participants have said about a previous version of this course:

  • The whole workshop was extremely useful. But I found particularly useful the discussions within groups so that everyone from different fields had the chance to reflect on how to apply the theories of learning to their own subject. I also appreciated the references shared through the slides for further reading, very useful.
  • It provides a very helpful overview of the different ways that people learn, and that people can teach in order to improve the effectiveness of teaching for achieving long-term learning outcomes.
  • Heather is a brilliant presenter.  The course had the right mix of content delivery and discussions, both of which were very useful. Even for staff with a lot of teaching experience, who might have learned good practices by trial and error along the way, this is useful to relate practice to theories.

Aims and objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  • Be aware of various theories of how people learn
  • Have considered the implications of learning theory for teaching practice
  • Have considered what changes they could make in their own teaching
