  • Group discussion: Scenarios

Participants are required to complete pre-course work through Moodle. OSDS will liaise directly with participants how to access for completion.

What participants have said about a previous version of this course:

  • An up to date understanding of current policies and good practise will improve your confidence and (hopefully) effectiveness as a PhD supervisor. Particularly good for knowing what to do or who to ask if something goes wrong.
  • It's useful to talk through hypothetical scenarios with other supervisors from other subjects and with different experiences.
  • Very helpful to attend such an event - it is really essential for all supervisors in a rapidly changing research and international landscape, and will help to guard against unwitting errors or bad supervisory practice.

Aims and objectives

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Understand the process and landscape of postgraduate research study in St Andrews, and the support available to supervisors and their students
  • Have explored the different facets of PhD supervision to understand what good supervision looks like, and considered approaches for managing their PhD student relationships
  • Understand the key rules and regulations which all PhD supervisors must know and need to adhere to, in St Andrews.
