New students on a research postgraduate course

• Apply for accommodation

  You can apply for accommodation 48 hours after you receive and accept an offer of a place to study at the University. You should apply as soon as possible, regardless of whether your offer is conditional, unconditional, or an insurance place.

  Once you have set up your University account (see below), you can access your application at any time through your MySaint portal.

• Open your computer account

  Open your computer account and activate your University email.

  Your University email address is your username@st-andrews.ac.uk.

  Your username is included in the entrant email and should always be lowercase. You will create your password when you open your account.

  Once you have opened your email account, you will be able to access it using Office 365. You should check your University email inbox at least every 48 hours as important information is often sent to students by email.

• Pay your fees

  You will need to pay your tuition and accommodation fees (or set up an instalment plan) to fully register with the University.

  It is University policy not to send out invoices to students for payment of tuition or accommodation as all the fee information is published on our web pages. 

  Entrants should note that it is a condition of registration with the University that they accept liability for their tuition fees.

• Apply for your student ID card

  Apply for your student ID (matriculation) card as soon as possible to allow time to produce your card ready for your arrival.

  You will receive your card during orientation. This card is also your library borrowing card and will give you access to University buildings, such as the open-access computer classrooms.

  If you are applying for University accommodation

  If you have registered to apply for University accommodation, you do not need to apply separately for a student ID (matriculation) card.

  As part of applying for accommodation, you will be asked to upload a photo that will be used to create a card that is both your matriculation card and your accommodation key card.

• Register with a doctor

  Taking care of your health and wellbeing during your studies is important. We highly recommend that you register with a doctor in St Andrews at the start of your studies if you will be at the University for more than one semester.

• Students with a disability

  If you are a student with a disability, it is never too early to start organising the support you may need.

  Once you have accepted your place, get in touch with the disability team by email: disability@st-andrews.ac.uk. They can assist you in preparing for St Andrews.

• Meet with your supervisor

  Students are required to contact their supervisors at the start of their studies. Please contact your department if you wish to make an appointment to see your supervisor.

  Research students, as a general rule, cannot take modules for credit. Your supervisor will discuss with you an appropriate programme of training.

• Online matriculation

  Online matriculation will be available via MySaint and should be completed before your programme start date.

  This online process will guide you through the elements of registration required for you to become a St Andrews student. You should complete the process before you arrive in St Andrews where possible.

  An email will be sent to your University account with instructions on how to access online matriculation once it is available. It is important that you have created your University email account to be able to access the online facility via MySaint.

  Online matriculation includes completing an online course in training in:

  • Good academic practice (sometimes referred to as 'TGAP')
  • Research integrity.

  Part of online matriculation may involve uploading a copy of your passport (if you were born in the UK, you may upload your UK birth certificate instead).

• Register for the postgraduate researcher induction

  The postgraduate researcher induction is intended to help you make a smooth transition from undergraduate or Masters study to postgraduate research study. It focuses particularly on University procedures and the support available to help you make the most of your research and development opportunities as a postgraduate student.
