Work with the Music Centre
The Music Centre has a range of opportunities for paid work including gigs, ushering and internships. Members of the Music Centre receive a weekly newsletter in which these opportunities are shared. You can also follow us on social media to find out about opportunities.

The Music Centre sometimes requires students to help with ushering and stage set ups at concerts and events. This work requires students to be punctual and well-presented and follow safety briefings given by Music Centre staff. Check newsletters and social media for opportunities.

Student musicians (soloists, duos and small groups) of any sort who are interested in being considered for both internal and external performance opportunities will often be active Music Centre members, but we are always keen to know students who are ready for paid performance opportunities. The Music Centre often receives requests for musicians for weddings, functions and private events. We are particularly keen to hear from popular, jazz, folk and traditional musicians, though classical musicians and pre-formed groups should also register to be considered as opportunities arise. Register here.

Through the Careers Centre Summer Internship Scheme, the Laidlaw Leadership and Research Programme, and the St Andrews Research Internship Scheme the Music Centre often has students working on a variety of projects.
Current opportunities:
We are looking for six research interns to work on composition projects and surveys to help develop the work of the Music Centre. Read on to find out more:
Composition as Research
The project will see students working with Honorary Professor of Composition Piers Hellawell to develop a new piece of music. The final performance will be on Wednesday 26 February 2025 as part of the St Andrews New Music Week. Interns will be expected to meet with Piers Hellawell to develop their compositions and consider how the creative process is akin to more typical research methods. The final score for performers is due on Monday 2 December.
There are four internships for this project.
One intern will have an allocation of 50 hours and will write for a professional ensemble and soprano.
Three other research assistants will have an allocation of 10 hours each and will write for a student pianist and a student singer.
The number of hours allocated to each student will be according to experience as evidence in the application process. The hourly rate of pay is £12.08.
Understanding engagement with music in St Andrews
This project will have two strands, each assigned to an individual student. Collaborative working will be expected: one student will investigate the engagement of Music Centre members and another the musicking habits of musicians not engaged with the Music Centre. The project in particular wishes to understand popular/nonclassical musicians in St Andrews. The final report is due Monday 2 December 2024.
There are two internships for this project, both are for 30 hours each.
