Many music outreach projects take place in schools and enrich the expressive arts curriculum.
The Byre Opera project introduces secondary school pupils to the thrill and drama of live opera each year. The stories of individual productions are used as a basis for creative work in music, composition, art and drama. Previous themes have included climate change, family relationships and loss. Pupils visit a dress rehearsal and meet the cast and production team as part of the programme.
Artists performing concerts in St Andrews are sometimes able to include a session exploring specialist musical techniques or less familiar genres with school pupils in both primary and secondary schools. Previous workshops have included medieval music, baroque ornamentation and composition inspired by Beethoven.
StAMP is a major new initiative that will involve eight local brass bands and ten primary schools in Cowdenbeath, Glenrothes, Cupar, Buckhaven and Kirkcaldy. Working with members of The Wallace Collection, the Music Centre is investing in the future of brass playing in Fife by developing a comprehensive in-school music tuition programme, creating new resources and series of musical events.
