Visiting scholars and visiting students

The School of Modern Languages has a vibrant interdisciplinary research community and welcomes research visits from scholars and students at all career stages looking to further their research through a period at St Andrews.

You should be working in a subject relevant to the School's research themes and be looking to spend a period of between 1 and 12 months in St Andrews. You should have a specific research reason to be in St Andrews - either because of materials available in the University Library or because of a research link with a member of the School's academic staff.

Facilities

Visiting scholars and visiting students can use the University Library - you can borrow books, access online resources, and use the inter-library loan service.

Every effort is made to provide fee-paying visiting scholars and visiting students with desk space in a shared office. However, desk space is subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed in advance.

A guest email account can be provided if you are spending more than one month in St Andrews. Access to any other specific facilities must be discussed in advance.

You are welcome to attend relevant research events taking place during your time in St Andrews. Visiting scholars and visiting students are not permitted to attend scheduled classes. Research supervision and training is available for visiting training doctoral students only.

Fees

Fees are normally payable to the School for hosting visiting scholars and visiting students:

  1. visiting training doctoral students - £4,000 for 12 months, £2,000 for 6 months
  2. visiting collaborative doctoral students - £1,000 for 12 months, £500 for 6 months
  3. visiting post-doctoral scholars - £5,000 for 12 months, £2,500 for 6 months
  4. visiting academic scholars - £1,000 for 12 months, £500 for 6 months

Please contact the School Office for advice on fees for visits of less than 6 months.

Applications

In the first instance, you should identify a member of the School's academic staff who might be willing to support your application. You should find someone whose research interests are related to your own area of research - see the list of School staff.

If the member of academic staff is willing to support your application, you should send to the School Manager your curriculum vitae/resumé and a covering letter outlining your plans (length and start date of visit, purpose for visiting St Andrews, and arrangements for paying fees) - please email modlangs@st-andrews.ac.uk

Applications should be submitted at least 6 months and no more than 12 months before the planned start date for your visit.

All visits are subject to approval from the Head of School.
