Research fellowships

The School of Modern Languages welcomes expressions of interest from researchers wanting to apply for research fellowships.

Fellowships are externally-funded positions enabling you to advance your research and continue your development as a researcher.

The School prides itself on being a vibrant, diverse, inclusive, and engaging academic community. The School was awarded an Athena Swan bronze award in April 2021 for its commitment to gender equality.

Fellowship schemes

The School will consider supporting applications for a range of externally-funded research fellowships, including:

Suitably qualified researchers may also wish to consider the University's global fellowships scheme.

Selection

Expressions of interest should comprise a curriculum vitae/resumé, the names and contact details for two academic referees, an outline of your research interests and research plan for the fellowship, and a covering letter addressed to the Director of Research noting the fellowship scheme for which you wish to be considered.

Please be mindful of the external deadlines for fellowship applications; you should send your expression of interest to the School in good time before the specified deadline.

The School will consider the following when assessing expressions of interest:

  • whether you meet the eligibility criteria and requirements for the fellowship
  • your track record as a researcher including research publications
  • the quality of your research outline and plan
  • the fit with School's research themes and research environment

Please note that for some fellowship schemes there may be a School-level and/or University-level ranking and selection process.
