Teaching
My role as an Associate Lecturer (Education Focused) in Russian and a Russian Year Abroad Co-ordinator is to inspire students to embrace and excel at speaking Russian language while educating them about the unique culture of my home country. I oversee language provision and coordinate practical language-related teaching in the Russian Department. I have designed and developed teaching and learning materials for Russian language classes at all levels of the undergraduate programme. These include course materials for oral, AV, translation and written classes (essay) and additional teaching materials for the Multi-Media Centre. I have taught a broad range of core Russian language classes to students at all levels from complete beginners to senior honours.
Originally from Russia, Yaroslavl, I have an undergraduate degree from Yaroslavl State Pedagogic University (Russia), MLitt in Russian Studies from University of St Andrews (Scotland) in 2005 and degree in “Russian as a Foreign Language and Teaching Methodology and Techniques” from Pushkin State Institute of Russian Language, Moscow (Russia).
I oversee our students’ involvement in extracurricular activities, including participation in the University Russian society and in the National Russian Essay competition, organised by the Russian Committee of the Association for Language Learning (ALL). Several of my students won major prizes in their relevant categories, including those for students in their first year through to honours level in Russian. I have used Russian film evenings as a vehicle for furthering understanding of Russian language, culture and people.
The project I have been running is called «Моя Россия» (“My Russia”) designed for students to share their experiences of Study Abroad through photographs and stories.
Together with our students I am running an exciting project the project “«Когда словари не помогают» (“When Dictionaries do not help”). The aim of the project is to create an e-learning resource which will help students researching the usage of certain words and phrases in Russian Language and to understand different issues of Russian grammar and vocabulary, the use of which might cause difficulties.
The short course I ran at the Open Association named ‘Scots tramping the roads to Russia’ reflects my deep interest in connections between Russian and Scottish cultures and the input of Scots in Russian history.
My other interest lies in understanding children’s bilingualism.
