Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships: Call for Applications

The School of Modern Languages at the University of St Andrews supports applications to the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship scheme on a competitive basis.

The School provides a vibrant research environment with internationally recognised expertise in its 8 language and culture disciplines (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Persian, Russian and Slavonic, Spanish) as well as in Comparative Literature, and in our centres and institutes. Areas of interest extend from the Middle Ages to the contemporary, and include literature, history, visual culture, memory studies, performance studies, postcolonial studies, cultural studies, poetry, gender and queer studies.

The deadline for applications to the School’s internal competition is  Monday 20 November 2023. Candidates should send the following information to langsdor@st-andrews.ac.uk:

  • Current position (if any). Applicants must not yet have held a full-time permanent academic post in a UK University.
  • Current job title
  • Current institution
  • Country of current institution
  • Title of research proposal: No more than 80 characters including spaces.
  • Fields of study: Select the fields of study which most closely reflect the area of research of the current application.
  • Abstract: Provide a short account of the research proposed in non-technical terms so as to be easily comprehensible to a non-expert (maximum 100 words).
  • Details of current and past research: Give details of your current and past research experience (maximum 250 words). If this is too extensive to be summarised in 250 words, focus on the research most relevant to the current application.
  • Detailed statement of proposed research: This should include aims, objectives, methodology and outcomes (e.g. publication plans). This statement and the bibliographic references may not exceed two sides of A4. We recommend that you use Arial font size 11. 
  • Major publications:Upload a list of your publications (maximum one side of A4) under three main headings ‘In preparation’ (giving details on the publication’s state of preparedness), ‘Submitted’ (giving detail of their stage in the peer-review and editing process) and ‘Published’. We recommend that you use Arial font size 11. If a full list of publications exceeds one page, then include only the publications most relevant to the current application.
  • 3 Referees: Name, email address and current institution.  No more than one referee should be from the proposed host institution.. The head of department from your proposed host institution may not act as a referee.
  • PhD Award Date: Provide the date of your viva voce examination for their doctoral thesis. Please note that candidates must hold a doctorate/equivalent research experience by the time they take up the Fellowship. Applications are invited from those with a doctorate who submitted their doctoral thesis for viva voce examination not more than four years prior to the application closing date (unless they have had a career break or their work has been impacted by the covid-19 pandemic, a case will need to be made).

  • An up-to-date CV (maximum 3 pages A4)
