Research areas

I'm the Director of the Graduate School for Interdisciplinary Studies at St Andrews, and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine where I work in the area of medical ethics and healthcare policy.  I was a lab-based pharmacologist initially, working in the area of nerve regeneration following spinal cord injury, and became increasingly interested in bioethics, law, policy and practice.  I like to explore questions of trust and fairness in healthcare (nationally and globally), and the challenges of contemporary scientific advances and research ethics.  Recently I've collaborated with the Mackenzie Institute for Early Diagnosis at St Andrews to consider the ethical, social and legal implications of early diagnosis.

I also have interests in pedagogy and SoTL (scholarship of teaching and learning), particularly around the teaching of medical ethics and interdisciplinarity.

I'm a member of the ASME (Association for the Study of Medical Education) Research Methodology Group, and the Institute of Medical Ethics Scottish Group.
