Department and student responsibilities
In seeking to achieve the shared objectives of the Department of Management community, staff aim to create an environment in which students can thrive and develop as independent learners. You as as a student have a role to play in this – by engaging in opportunities, taking ownership of your development and reflecting on how you are progressing. To reach this goal, there are levels of input from the Department and students which should be regarded as minimum requirements.
Department responsibilities:
- deliver an excellent education through core curricular learning and teaching
- provide accessible, timely and clear notification of module objectives and content, teaching methods, assessment and the penalties for non-compliance with attendance or submission requirements
- ensure sensitivity in setting coursework submission dates and early notice of such dates via Moodle
- provide accurate reading lists for modules, reflecting the contributions of female and BAME authors where appropriate, and make recommended material available in the library, with heavy use materials available through the short-loan system
- provide up to date module resources via Moodle, the University's online learning environment
- return coursework with appropriate feedback, word processed where possible and normally within three weeks of submission unless otherwise stated. All continuous assessment grades are technically provisional until endorsed at the final Exam Board.
- provide advance notification of, and explanation for, any changes to teaching times or rooms, communicated by email or by updating relevant web pages
- ensure all teaching staff are accessible via published weekly office hours
- provide opportunities for discussion of performance in assessed coursework and examinations, and in relation to your general progress with your studies.
The University policy concerning feedback on examination performance and the return of examination scripts can be found in the policy document Feedback to students on assessed work (PDF). - support students proactively, responsively and proportionally, signposting appropriate services in the University where necessary
- work in partnership with students to create welcoming, supportive, safe and inclusive environments and communities
- offer opportunities for voice to students and respond appropriately as necessary.
Student responsibilities:
- take ownership of your learning by engaging in the many learning opportunities afforded to you; endeavour to become more self-aware and reflective; manage your workload and organise your time effectively
- be respectful and professional in communication and interactions with staff and other students
- be punctual and have full attendance at lectures and tutorials
- check relevant University web pages for timetable changes and for notices
- read the reference materials provided by your Module Coordinator and consult additional sources as necessary
- have adequately prepared for, and participate respectfully and actively in, smaller group classes, such as tutorials and seminars
- undertake the University's unconscious bias and the diversity online training modules for students
- organise and schedule work so that submission deadlines are met
- When assessed presentations are included in the coursework of a particular module, attendance on the date and at the time specified is mandatory and the presentation should be regarded as a formal examination.
- provide prior notification of unavoidable absence from lectures or tutorials (e.g. on health grounds) by using the Self Certification function in MySaint. In these situations, you must also email your Module Coordinator and copy in the relevant administrator.
- follow strict compliance with University regulations relating to academic good practice and acceptance of the penalties for non-compliance. See the Good Academic Practice section of this handbook.
- undertake the Training in Good Academic Practice (TGAP) module
- manage information and requests coming to you. Check your University email on a daily basis, responding promptly where needed and acting on requests or information sent to you.
- inform the School promptly of any change of address for either your St Andrews or home details, this must be done via MySaint
- be proactive in seeking support if necessary.
Staff recognise that students will need time, especially in the first semester, to adjust to the timetable, to get to know the University and to understand responsibilities that need to be met. During this time and throughout the year you may encounter aspects of life that are difficult or uncertain. We encourage you to bring any issues that arise to the attention of the Department or Student Services as early as possible.
Personal details
You are responsible for ensuring your contact details are kept up to date. You may do this at any time during the year via MySaint. MySaint can also be accessed from the Current Students section of the University home page or via the student app.
Academic policies and regulations
