Assessment procedures
The Module Coordinator will explain the learning opportunities and practical aspects of assessment for each module. A central aim of assessment is that, for every module, the mode of assessment should link to module learning outcomes and provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning appropriately. The nature, description and timing of assessed coursework, called 'continuous assessment', and the mode of assessment are set out in module materials, generally on Moodle, at the start of the module.
It is important that students understand the guiding principles for the award of grades for assessed work. In particular, students should understand what is required to complete the assessment and that marking criteria are communicated in advance. The University requires anonymisation by matriculation number at all levels for assessed written coursework and examinations where practicable. Submitted work is second marked and moderated in line with the Department's conventions and grades are provisional until they have been ratified by an External Examiner appointed for this purpose. See more about marking and feedback.
The Department is committed to continuous review of its assessment procedures and is active in evaluating and implementing creative modes of assessment, where appropriate.
