If so, we invite you to give a short talk, about five minutes, about your experiences in advancing in your career. 1. What is Interconnect St Andrews?
A positive action network for women studying in SET/STEM subjects: 
SET = Science, Engineering and Technology
STEM = Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics
 
2. How is the group run?
The group started through the University Athena SWAN group with the Students' Association Director of Representation.  The first meeting planned to create such a group took place in July 2012 to help promote inclusion for female students studying in SET subjects:

  • Organised by the Students’ Association Sabbatical team
  • Supported by School Presidents and Student Representative Council (SRC)
  • Linked to the Athena SWAN Team and the University E&D Officer 

3. How can I get involved with Interconnect at University? 

Attending events and taking part in networking with staff members.

4. How is it funded and supported?
Interconnect is a partnership between Equate Scotland (formerly The Scottish Resource Centre for Women in SET) hosted by Edinburgh Napier University; NUS Scotland; and funded by the Scottish Government - more info: http://www.equatescotland.org.uk/interconnect/interconnect-student-network

5. How does it link in with other Gender Equality initiatives?
Supported by UK Resource Centre for Women, the initiatives practiced by the group assist the University with its commitment to advance equality of opportunity for female students as well as female researchers and academic staff.  Participation also assists SET/STEM Schools as part of their commitment towards achieving departmental gender equality Athena SWAN awards.
 
6. How can participating with Interconnect help my career as a student?
Interconnect helps students to develop personal networks, build links with industry and enhance their career prospects.  To achieve this Interconnect works with students, students associations, colleges and universities to develop and support Interconnect groups and activities.  Through Interconnect events and online initiatives, Interconnect aims to provide women students with opportunities to:

  • meet qualified women working in their subjects
  • meet with other female science, engineering, technology & built environment students
  • develop their CV and employability
  • promote SET/STEM to younger students
  • be kept up to date with news and events in their field
