Carl Magnus Stuart was the son of David Stuart of Farsta and Britta Nilsdotter Lillieram, and he was born in Sweden, brother of Johan Robert Stuart. After entering naval service in 1668 he travelled to Britain and became a musketeer in the king's guard and thus maintained his links with his family at home. He remained in London for two years. He studied fortifications and planned the defence of Karlskrona before returning to Sweden to become a court gentleman in 1671. Stuart was first a lieutenant and then a captain in fortifications by 1676. In 1682 he became a general quartermaster. After serving against the Turks he was appointed tutor and gentleman of the chamber to the crown prince Charles XII in 1689. He was again general quartermaster in 1695 and 1697. In 1700 he led the Swedish landing in Zealand, Denmark as major general of the infantry. In 1702, Stuart was the governor of Kurland. The following year he was lieutenant general of the infantry and director of fortifications in which capacity he employed his nephews Gabriel and Johan Robert Jnr. Gabriel was sent to Karlskrona and Johan Robert in Gothenburg, both on 6 December 1704 and both with the rank of Konduktor. He became a baron in 1703 and was put in charge of fortifications. He died two years later on died on 5th/6th December 1705 in Stockholm and was buried at Klara Kyrka on 13 December. He was married to Margareta Funck and had four children.
