James Dewar was noted as a merchant burgess of Perth. On 2 September 1678 he informed the baillie of Perth burgh that he was headed for Norway where he would undertake legal matters. Dewar duly appointed on John McGie, also a merchant burgess of Perth, to represent him and act on his behalf in Perth whilst Dewar was away.

At Perth, the second day of September 1678 years, in pns of Robert Snaw, ane of the pnt baylies of the said brugh, compeirid Andrew Monden (?) notar as pror for the after desyned James Dewar [De?oir] and gave in the factorie underwritten qrof the tenor followis.  Be it kend till all men be thir pnt lres me James Deuar merchant burgess of Perth, where as I am (god willing) shortlie to pas furth of this Kingdome to Norraway or the eisterd [eastward?] of the hoafe [Haafe?] for doing of my laull afairs and I, considering that in my absence furth of this kingdome my affairs and means within the samyne may suffer [Dewar appoints John McGie, mb of Perth, to act for his affairs in his absence]...
