James Metcalf was an English officer. He served at Berwick in the early 1570s and then in Ireland under Captain Henry Warren and Captain Brackenbury. He served in the Low Countries before serving as a lieutenant in the expedition to Portugal in 1589. Metcalf, along with Lieutenant James Johnson [SSNE 8467] obtained permission from the Privy Council to serve in Poland, but it is unlikely he went as he served in Essex's expedition to Normandy in 1591.
