Text source

Captain Cornellys served under the Prince of Orange in aid of the Dutch rebels in the 1570s. He was first reported to have served as an ensign in Haarlem, presumably under Colonel Henry Balfour [SSNE 5011]. He managed to escape the slaughter with several other Scottish officers and was promoted to captain. He served in the defense of Alkmaar in September 1573 along with Captain Smith [SSNE 8408]. Cornellys was killed at the siege of Breda on 4 October 1577 along with three or four of his soldiers while digging a trench under one of the walls.
