Horace Vere was an English officer in Dutch service. He was the younger brother of Sir Francis Vere [SSNE 4876]. He served in the Dutch Republic from 1591 to 1635, achieving the rank of captain in 1594, and was made a lieutenant-colonel in 1596 in the English expedition to Cadiz. He returned to Dutch service after the expedition, and became general over the Anglo-Dutch Brigade in 1605. He served in the Juliers-Cleves expeditions of 1610 and 1614 and commanded a regiment of English soldiers in the Palatinate expedition of 1620-1622, where he defended Mannheim, Heidelberg, and Frankenthal until Autumn 1622. He returned to the Netherlands and fought until the siege of Maastricht in 1632, afterwards entering into a period of retirement until his death in 1635.
