Sir John Borlase was an English officer in the Anglo-Dutch Brigade. He became a captain before 1610 and served at Juliers-Cleves in 1614. He served as lieutenant-colonel under Horace Vere in the Palatinate in 1622 and then as a colonel in the 1624 Anglo-Dutch levies. He retained his colonelcy and served in the expedition to Denmark under General Sir Charles Morgan [SSNE 89]. He was not retained in Dutch service on the expedition's return to the Low Countries, instead returning to England and becoming a military advisor to the government. He became an officer and politician in Ireland and was tasked with reforming the Irish army. He was a lord justice there until his death in 1648.
