DEEL, JAN [SSNE 8379]
Text source
John Deel was an English privateer (Sea-Beggar or Watergeuzen) in the service of the Prince of Orange between 1571-1572. He joined the crew of Symon Meyns in 1571. The ship ran out of food and so sailed to the Texel and then to Wieringen, where they spent five weeks 'terend op de huislieden.' The townspeople evidently tired of their guests and Deel was wounded in a fight with the locals. On 3 March 1572 he was captured, taken to The Hague and executed.
