Andrew Durie was born in Anstruther in 1596 to Presbyterian minister Robert Durie and was therefore a brother of Irenicist John Durie [SSNE 1243]. On 18 October 1612 he matriculated at the University of Leiden (where his brother was also studying) but did not finish his studies there. Instead, he enlisted as a surgeon on the ship 'Hollandia' in the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and departed the Netherlands in 1619. He arrived in the East Indies in 1620 and became the chief surgeon in the Castle and later in the second hospital of Batavia. He was a traveling companion of Dr Jacobus Bontius, who considered Durie to be a 'chirurgus expertissimus' and mentioned him frequently in his work. Durie was married three times in Batavia. His wives were Sara Seroyen (1625), Anna van Nederhoven (1629), and Catharina Stroomborgen (1637) and he had children by the first two. He died in Batavia in 1655.
