Sir Henry Philip Herbert was an English officer in Dutch service during the Thirty Years' War. Despite the longevity of his service very little has been written on him and his career. He may have been a captain in Dutch service as early as 1606 but there were several Herberts who were in and out of Dutch service in the early seventeenth century so it is difficult to say for certain when he joined the Dutch army. Certainly by 1617 he was captain of a company in the pay of the States of Holland and by 1620 he had been promoted to sergeant-major in the regiment of Colonel Sidney. He was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1623 and served at the siege of 's-Hertogenbosch in 1629. On 2 December 1632, several months after Colonel Edward Harwood was killed at Maastricht, Herbert took command of the regiment. He served at the siege of Breda in 1637. Herbert died by 1 November 1644 and was succeeded by Ferdinand Knightly [SSNE 8169].

Herbert was married to Jeanne van Horne, daughter of Johan van Horne and Anna van Flodrop. She had died before 1632, when Herbert remarried Louise Henriette van Nassau, daughter of Justinus van Nassau and granddaughter of William the Silent.
