Text source

Catharina de Decqueve was a Dutch woman and widow of Captain Everard Halkett. Halkett commanded a company in Colonel George Ramsay’s regiment of the Scots-Dutch Brigade. Originally commissioned as a captain in Mackay’s regiment, Halkett was transferred to Ramsay’s regiment during the Brigade’s return to Scotland in 1689. During the Highland War (1689-92), Halkett died at some point in the latter half of 1689 but arrears in his wages were forwarded to Catharina, residing in Rotterdam, by Captain Walter Corbet on 24th December 1689. This transaction was co-ordinated via the renowned Scottish merchant Andrew Russell and his contact in Edinburgh, James MacLurg. The receipt of this transfer for 100 guilders from Corbet to Catharina refers to her as the ‘weduwe Halkeet’
