Hester Geilmans was a Dutch woman and widow of an unnamed corporal of the Scots-Dutch Brigade. Her husband was in Captain Macleod’s company of Major-General Hugh Mackay of Scourie’s [SSNE 5005] (the first) regiment of the Brigade and was killed at the battle of Killiecrankie, 27th July 1689, during the Scottish Highland War (1689-92). She and three other widows (Closkine Jacobs [SSNE 8277], Kathrin McLauchlane [SSNE 8279] and Kathrin Michells [SSNE 8280]) petitioned the Scottish Privy Council on 5th September 1689 for funds to return to the Dutch Republic. Their petition was supported with statements from Captain Macleod and Ensign Sutherland that their husbands had served in the regiment as ‘faithfull souldiers’ for 15 years. On 9th September 1689, the Council granted each of them 5 Rijksdaalders from the Treasury to facilitate this at a cost of £4 Sterling in total.
