John Dalyell was an officer in the Scots-Dutch Brigade and the Scottish army. He was the third son of General Thomas Dalyell of Binns. He was made a captain in Colonel John Wauchope's [SSNE 8259] regiment on 5 September 1686. Dalyell, along with his colonel, was one of the 60 officers of the Brigade who gave up his commission on the orders of James VII in 1688. That year he was made a captain in the newly raised Scottish regiment from Musselburgh, which was still commanded by Wauchope. He was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1689 and on 29 May 1695 was made lieutenant-colonel of Robert Mackay's regiment. He commanded the regiment at Blenheim in 1704, where he was killed. His widow and children were given a bounty of £102.
