STUART, ALEXANDER [SSNE 8104]
Text source
Alexander Stuart was a sergeant in the Scots-Dutch Brigade. He served in the company of Colonel Sir Robert Henderson [4975]. He married Digna van Loo (Digneke Jans van Loo) on 5 April 1606, a woman from Bergen-op-Zoom (Maclean, p. 36). Stuart was killed at the siege of Bergen-op-Zoom alongside his Colonel. On 16 August 1622, the Spanish troops besieging the city unsuccessfully assaulted a hornwork on the south side of the city and it was presumably in this engagement that Stuart was killed, as Colonel Henderson died in the fighting that night. Stuart's widow petitioned the States-General for a pension a little over a week later.
