William Butler appears in Sweden in the mid 1640 as a correspondent of Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna. From his letters we learn that he worked for John Maclean, the Gothenburg merchant. He writes variously from Sweden, England and the Netherlands and gives Oxenstierna information regarding subjects as diverse as the importation of salt, the victories of Prince Rupert of the Rhine in England and logistical details of regarding the preparations by the Marquis of Montrose for an invasion of England. It us unclear what nationality Butler is - his file in the Oxenstierna collection calls him an English merchant (with a '?' after the comment), though given the connection to Montrose in the 1650s he might equally be Irish or Scottish. He also had dealings with the Scottish merchant John Maclean.
