Sir William Balfour was a veteran of the Scots-Dutch Brigade, serving between 1610 and 1628. He later participated in the British Civil Wars, serving at Edgehill as Major General of the reserve horse on the right wing on Parliamentary side. Along side him were Colonel James Wardlaw and Colonel George Dundas's dragoons.
