Archibald Bethune was an officer in the Scots-Dutch Brigade between 1614-1629. He succeeded Arthur Forbes as captain in 1614 and by 1617 commanded 120 men with a salary of £1655. He was promoted to sergeant-major by 28 December 1628 under Colonel Sir John Halkett [SSNE 7966]. Bethune was dead by 22 October 1629 and the sergeant-majorship may have passed to James Haddon [SSNE 8035], who was also lieutenant-colonel by that time, or it may have passed to Mungo Hamilton, who Ferguson contends was made sergeant-major before Bois-le-Duc.
