Thomas Marjoribanks was an officer in the Scots-Dutch brigade between c. 1606-1621. He began as an ensign in Colonel William Edmond's [SSNE 8019] company and remained so after its transfer to Colonel Brog [SSNE 7842] in 1606. However, Marjoribanks and his lieutenant, George Ramsay [SSNE 8109] became involved in an argument with Brog after they felt he wrongly transferred them from the garrison of Utrecht in 1607. According to a petition by the Sheriff, Burgermeister, and Aldermen of Utrecht, Ramsay and Marjoribanks had "held their soldiers in such good order, discipline, and quietness, that they had not only been thanked by their late commander (Edmonds) and the soldiers themselves, but even by the whole community there," (Ferguson, 206). According to the petition, the two officers had been moved by Brog because they were seen to be instigators of a general demand by the company for arrears from the widow Edmonds.
In 1615 Marjoribanks was serving as captain lieutenant in command of Brog's company in the Utrecht garrison. On 27 February 1615, he became involved in a scuffle that had occurred between James Nering (of his company) and John Davidson (of Captain Bredenrode's). Evidently the two men had been in a fight or duel and Marjoribanks intervened on Nering's behalf, petitioning the Council of State to release the soldier "in order to get himself cured of his several pitiable wounds and bruises," (Ferguson, 279). This was agreed upon on the condition that the officer would stand bail and offer Nering into custody on command.
Marjoribanks became a full captain on 16 January 1620 when he succeeded the command of Captain Hamilton's company. He was dead by 4 September 1636 and was succeeded by James Scot.
