SPENS, DAVID [SSNE 7780]
Text source
David Spens was noted as a captain in Swedish service in 1614. He appears to be related to James Spens [SSNE 1642] who mentioned David in a letter to Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna in July 1614. In his letter James Spens states that Captain David's father, a preacher and an elderly man, is in dire economic circumstances and that as they are his 'kinsmen' he feels bound to intercede for them. James Spens requests that not only will the Swedish king pay David Spens what he is owed for his services, but that those who are in possession of the funds may be encouraged to make punctual payment of them. Although James Spens' letter was written in July it was not received in Stockholm until a full month later, stamped 28 August.Swedish Riksarkiv, Anglica 5, 25 July 1614.
