William Maul served in the Swedish army between 1605 and 1645. In 1639, James King wrote to Axel Oxenstierna noting that a Major Mell and a Captain Blair had each taken on a company from the late Colonel Leslie's regiment and he sought help in ensuring the officers were able to pay for them. It is probable it was William. Maul participated at the battle of Leipzig as colonel of an infantry regiment at the battle of Leipzig in 1642. He went on to serve as commandant in several Swedish towns and garrisons including Narva. His family were later ennobled and in these records it is stated he was probably Scottish.
