Captain Burke and his company served the Imperial army and convoyed General Morgan's troops on their journey from Stade (Bremen Stift) to Holland in 1628. Upon his return to Stade Burke was arrested and threatened with execution as he was suspected to have made a private treaty with General Morgan. He managed to escape to Hamburg where he offered his service to the Stuart diplomat, Sir Robert Anstruther.
