William Rives acted as factor on behalf of English merchants in Bremen. In 1690 he was forced to escape from the city after his landlord, the Scottish merchant Gilbert Spence, discovered that he was having an intimate relationship with his stepdaughter which resulted in an unplanned pregnancy.
