James Spence was the son of Andrew Spence [SSNE 7598] who acquired citizen rights of Bremen in 1636 and thereafter worked as a pearl embroiderer. James Spence received his citizen rights on 14 June 1669 having been a cord maker's apprentice in 1656. In 1668 he lived in the guard district St Stephani.
