John Bruce was a citizen of Riga in the 1650s. He was noted as such in the Remonstration of the Swedish resident in London, Benjamin Bonnel in 1654 after a ship, The Great Christopher of Stettin, was taken by English privateers. Bruce was one of a number of citizens of Riga with cargo on board. It is possible that he is the John Bruce who was the father of Charles Johan Bruce who was was born in Stockholm, the son of John and Gertrude Bruce. He applied to be naturalised as English in 1703, and it is probable that he was successful..
