LESLIE, ALEXANDER [SSNE 7201]
Text source
Assumed to have been born 1631, Alexander Wilhelm Leslie was the son of George (Jürgen) Leslie [SSNE 7309] and his wife Maria née Watson. He had a younger brother Joachim who seems to have died young and four sisters of whom we know only three by their first names Anna, Catherine and Elizabeth [SSNE 7202]. Alexander served as a cavalry captain in Swedish service from the 1650s.
When his father died in 1651, Alexander inherited the Sackhof (Saka) estate in Estonia, about 30 miles from Narva. Bordering on the Sackhof estate was the estate Ontika whose owner was Anton Falkenklau (ennobled 1648) who died around 1656. Shortly after, his widow Anna Margareta née Maydell who inherited Ontika married her neighbour Alexander Leslie. She was the daughter of Tönnes Maydell and Elisabet Dorothea von Treyden. Tönnes, who came from a German-Baltic noble dynasty that had lived in Etsonia for centuries, was a cavalry captain in fieldmarshall Gustav Horn's regiment and owned Wredenhagen and Sompah estates in Jewe, Estonia and died before 1657. Margareta Maydell was thus of noble lineage.
Alexander owned Sackhof estate until his death before 24 July 1667 when, for the first time, his wife was noted as a widow. Thereafter, his son, Alexander Wilhelm Leslie [SSNE 7310] became owner of Sackhof. Alexander also had two daughters Anna Margaretha and Marie Elizabeth [SSNE 7203], the former remained unmarried, the latter married Captain Gustaf Fredrik Wassman (ennobled 1683, but not introduced) around 1679. She was to inherit the estate Briskovahof in Ingermanland from Alexander‘s sister Elisabeth. The widow Anna Margaretha Leslie née Maydell died before 20 October 1685 when a funeral banquet was held in her honour at Maydell's Sompah estate.
